The Speaker this month is Vic Bell from Detroit, Michigan. She will speak about her background, her art, selling fine art online, and meeting your financial goals without compromising your creative soul in times of continued crisis.

"The process of organic metalsmithing - in which the material exudes Afro-futurism and shows the hand of this Maker - is at the heart of my work. I express this aesthetic by using the ancient techniques of chasing, light repoussé, and the lost wax casting process. Seashells, high polish and acid baths are components that give the metals their voice, shouting as an individual from their collective elements. Geometric shapes and marks found in the metal, reflect my playfulness through abstract illustration.

Thousands of blows per piece, mimic the Maker community found throughout Detroit - giving ode to the art of noise, the birthplace of techno. My work responds to the formidable determination of the black and indigenous women of Detroit - strong, complex... beautiful. It is not the allure of their aesthetic that interests me. Rather it is the entire depth of their forms and the abundance of varied textures that are my inspiration.

I learned basic and advanced metalsmithing techniques at Wayne State University (Detroit) from German-American artist Philip Fike and Japanese American artist (and Cranbrook Arts Academy graduate) J.J. Masuda."

ABOUT EMPOWERING WOMEN ARTISTS

Our Empowering Women Artists program is a collaboration between Huron River Art Collective, Women's Caucus for Art Michigan Chapter, and the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. This program offers an invited speaker event every other month. On alternate months we will host a casual discussion and networking event. All events will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm.

Together, we support and empower women in their pursuit to gain equity in the arts, assure diversity, equity, and inclusion with a special interest in supporting women of color and all persons who identify as women.
