Loretta Markell
Born in Detroit, Michigan, I received my B.F.A and M.F.A. from Wayne State University. I paint, or take photos just about every day of the things I see around me. At home I see wild life through my window or as I walk around my home in a rural area of Michigan, not far from rivers and lakes. Most of my paintings have included the figure usually a woman or girl often with an animal or birds. I feel I am at a cross-roads now that may lead me to create paintings that are less representational. As a painting progresses, it changes, sometimes imagined narratives result. My intention is to change what I see in the real world into artwork that is at the same time abstract and recognizable as a feeling, or a sense of something indescribable in any other way.
