Lindsay Tyler’s "Spirit of Detroit" hat is currently showcased in “Adorned: A Celebration of Wearable Art,” an exhibition at the UNCLE Credit Union Art Gallery, Bankhead Theater, Livermore, California. The show explores the intersection of fashion and fine art, highlighting wearable masterpieces. It runs from January 9 to March 1, 2025, and is open Thursday through Sunday, 1 pm to 5 pm, with free admission. Additionally, four of her paintings are on display at The Raven Café in Port Huron, Michigan, until the end of March 2025. The Raven Café, located at 932 Military Street, is a cultural hub known for its eclectic atmosphere and support for local artists. Kim Santini is now represented by The Zebra Gallery in Easton, Maryland, a gallery who's mission is to bring together the zebras of the artwork, those evolutionary artists who see novelty in the ordinary and who show us perspectives we have never seen before.
Kate Apple won an Honorable Mention for her work “Art” in the Grosse Pointe Art Association's show Food in Art. She created the work in the style of a 1970s rock ‘n’ roll poster in which the rock star is “Art,” surrounded with a variety of foods.
Steffanie Samuels, whose paintings deal with climate change and ways we can better the planet had a solo exhibition, “Unnatural Climate: An Abstract View,” June 28 - July 25, 2024 at The Gallery at Brewery Park. The show also featured the work of photographer Amy Sacka and the non-profit environmental group called “Unnatural Climate- An Abstract View.” .
Steff Samuels also was accepted as Artist-in-Residence for the month of September 2024 to study climate change on La Gomera. It’s the second smallest island in the Canary archipelago, off the coast of Africa but a territory of Spain. The island is a UNESCO Biosphere as well as the largest old growth forest of Laurasilva Trees.
Lynn Edwards Newman will be leading a workshop Saturday, October 19, 2024 (2-4 pm) at the Padzieski Gallery focused on enhancing communication through hands-on art experiences.
Loretta Markell was awarded "Best of Show" in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association exhibition “My Masterpiece” (September 26 - November 15, 2024; Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lake Shore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236). Kimberly Santini received honorable mention awards in both the Artists Choice show at the Thumb Annual Art Exhibition at Starkweather Arts Center (for “Goldfish Goldfinch,“ juror Darcel Daneau) and at The Anton Art Center (for “Hope,” juror Dr Anita Bates). Kim Santini has a new free art journaling lesson posted to her YouTube channel. She started publishing free art journaling content during the pandemic as a means to build community and foster creative expression. The newest lesson, Robin's Egg Blue, walks students through creating a page spread using found objects to draw and fingerpainting to create shapes. Her courses are designed for all ages, with no prior art experience needed, and most can be done with objects/materials already on hand. The lesson can be found here.

“If a Brush Could Talk” at the Starkweather Arts Center June 7 - 28, 2024 (219 N. Main St, Romeo, MI) is a show of works by the critique group “The Thursday Brushes,” which has been active for over thirty years. Represented are members Janet Almstadt-Davison, Barbara Clay, Laura Gabriel, Sue Michels, Kimberly Santini, and Bobbie Tarbunas, along with Mary Marple and Christina Haylett. Edee Joppisch was the subject of one-woman shows in two galleries in northern Michigan in 2023, and last spring she participated in “Gene Pool,” an exhibition with Sharlet Di Giorgio and their two sons.

On May 18 and 19, 2024 Color|Ink Studio (20919 John R, Hazel Park, MI) hosted "Big Ink,” which gave over a dozen artists the opportunity to print their super-sized woodblocks on “The Big Tuna”, a custom-built traveling press. Participating were DSWPS members Theresa Moore, Linda Allen, and Nobuko Yamasaki.
Barb Weisenburg has been selected to design and facilitate 3 murals this summer for the Ocqueoc Outdoor Center in Millersburg MI. The Center is a historic facility that was built by the CCC.

Five works by Kathryn Poremski are included in “AI and the Creator” at the Hatch Gallery (Hamtramck, MI) May 4 - 26, 2024. She developed them by first creating a voice-to-image AI “photograph,” which she then used as a reference image for painting.

Anne Furnaris’ sculpture “Omphalos of the World” won an Honorable Mention in the Lake Side Palette Club show at Grosse Pointe War Memorial, open March 4 to May 2 2024. The same sculpture won 3rd place in the August 2024 biennial exhibition at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum in Saginaw.

When There Are Nine is the second annual exhibition in honor of Women’s History Month. See it at the Kayrod Gallery in the Hannan Center (4750 Woodward, Detroit 48201) through April 18, 2024. This multi-media exhibit showcases the work of female artists, including DSWPS members Nina Ashraf Asmi, Martine MacDonald, and Sharlene Welton. An additional 9 artists are a part of a new 2024 focus called “Remembering Women's Suffrage.” It includes DSWPS members Patricia Baker, Sara Hadley, and Janet Kondziela. Also joining the exhibit is member Laura Earle's Fetish Project, a non-traditional fashion show displayed on mannequins.
Sharlene Welton, the organizer observes: “This year our women’s art exhibit… recalls the often forgotten past when women could not vote. [Our art] pays tribute to those who lectured, lobbied, marched, were arrested and jailed, and protested in hunger strikes. We must remember and not take this right for granted, especially in these turbulent recent times. We must band together and vote for legislation and representatives who promote women’s choices. The fight for women’s empowerment is not over. Come join us.“

With great sadness, we report the passing away December 20, 2023 of Barbara Eko Murphy. A stalwart supporter of the arts, she was an unfailing champion and promoter of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and she is sorely missed. Rose writes: “I spent a lot of time painting at Mill Race Village in Northville this summer. Set next to babbling brook, it is kind of a smaller ‘Greenfield Village’ for Northville. It has beautiful old Victorian homes and other historic buildings that have been moved there from around the area. It’s a very welcoming place with the nicest volunteers. There is a lot going on at the Northville Art Center! Please stop by.“
Nobuko Yamasaki’s woodcut, “Her Dream” won Best of Show at the Grosse Pointe Art Center Black and White exhibition. Nearly 200 artists entered, with the works of 65 on view until November 10, 2023. The prize for winning first place is a solo show in the Manoogian Arts Wing at University Liggett school in Fall 2023.
